Fly fishing rods

The most important piece of fly fishing equipment that you will buy is the fly fishing rod. There are a variety of fly fishing rods available on the current market but it is very important to make sure that yours is of high quality. If you haven’t ever been shopping for fly fishing rods before, your first trip into the sporting goods store can be overwhelming and intimidating. Buying the wrong fly fishing rod can result in a disastrous fishing trip for the novice fly fisherperson (also called an Angler) and is probably the reason that the sport of fly fishing hasn’t spread as quickly as other sports have. After all, buying the wrong kind of fly fishing rod is a wonderful way to waste a lot of money.

Fly rods come in a variety of actions and flexes. Before going shopping for fly fishing rods, it is important to have a working understanding of fly rod action and flex. Of course, before going any further, you should know that fly fishing rods are made for different types of game, so it is important to know what you are going to be going fishing for before you head out to select your fly fishing rod.

Fly fishing rods have three key actions. Usually fly rods are slow, medium and fast action. Sometimes the fast action fly rods are known as tip flex fly rods. Sometimes the medium action fly rods are known as mid-flex fly rods. The slow action fly rods are known as the full flex fly rods.

Fast action fly rods have the least flexibility of the fly fishing rods. Only the tip of the rod is flexible. This means that only the tip of the fly rod will bend while you are casting. This lack of flexibility makes the fast action fly fishing rods the most powerful. Fast action fly rods cast the line the furthest and often the fastest of any of the rods that are available. Fast action rods are better for landing larger fish.

Medium action fly rods are fairly flexible but also fairly stiff. Medium action rods are the most popular of all of the fly rods. They are also the most versatile of all of the fly rods. The medium action fly rods can cast longer and are able to work well (at least when used by a good caster) in the majority of conditions of spring creek fishing. These are also good rods for people who only want to buy one fly fishing rod.

The slow action fly rod is the most flexible of all of the fly fishing rods. The slow action fly fishing rod has significant bend for the majority of its length. Slow action fly rods are for fly fisher people who are making short casts. They are also ideal for people who want to make very accurate and very gentle casts. These rods work best when used in small rivers or in spring creeks.

Fly Fishing Lessons Tip #1

The main difference between fly fishing and other types of fishing is that instead of using a lure, fly fishing casts a line. Fly fishing line is typically heavier which makes it easier to cast than other fishing line.

Fly Fishing Lessons Tip #2

The flies used in fly fishing are typically thought of as either attractive or imitative. The attractive flies are used to prompt instinctive strikes by not looking like natural prey and instead environmental intruders. Flies that are imitative are flies that are made to look like the fish's natural food.

Fly Fishing Lessons Tip #3

Fly fishing is one of the most popular methods used by fishermen (and fisherwomen) to catch salmon and trout. Fly fishing can also be used to catch bass, pike, carp, panfish, snook, bonefish, redfish, the striped bass and tarpon.
