Fly Fishing Magazine

Over the last two hundred years, fly fishing has exploded in popularity. The act of fly fishing itself dates all the way back to the second century AD, but it didn’t become popular until the nineteenth century in Britain. For some reason, in the nineteenth century, the members of the British upper class discovered fly fishing and fell in love with it. It wasn’t very long before the sport became the sport of choice among the upper crust of British society and it wasn’t uncommon for very elite fly fishing clubs to form. While this was happening, the Americans and the Scandinavians were also becoming increasingly enamored with the sport of fly fishing. Unlike the British, however, in these countries fly fishing was not limited to members of the upper class. Everybody was fly fishing. Also unlike the British, who tended to favor traditional methods and techniques, the Scandinavians and Americans were in full favor of developing the sport further. They loved to experiment with and improve upon the traditional tools and techniques. Many of the gear and methods used in fly fishing today came about because of the Scandinavian and American’s experimentation.

Obviously, any popular sport will have publications that are devoted to it and fly fishing is no different. Are you searching for a fly fishing magazine? Here is a run down on a few of the fly fishing magazines that are on the market today.

Fly Fisherman is the first fly fishing magazine to come up when doing a google search for the “fly fishing magazine” topic. Fly Fisherman claims to be the leading magazine of the sport, a sport it calls “the quiet sport.” This magazine features online articles as well as a print publication. Readers can choose whether or not they want to subscribe to the website and print publication or just read the free articles that are featured on the website. Fly Fisherman also has its own store, forums and classifieds.

American Angler is another fly fishing magazine. This is also a dual publication in that it is available both in print and on the internet. American Angler offers articles, videos, fly patterns and a subscription option. They also have a number of fly fishing resources like recipes for the fish you will catch, river alerts and level news, and a forum devoted to the sport of fly fishing.

Fly Fishing and Fly Tying is a United Kingdom based fly fishing magazine. This fly fishing magazine is available in print and online. Fly Fishing and Fly Tying offers sections on fly fishing technique, patterns, travel, reviews of various fly fishing related materials, and also a forum. This magazine also has a section for saltwater fly fishing which is continuing to grow in popularity.

There are, of course, many other magazines devoted to fly fishing and fly fishing enthusiasts. A simple web search or trip to the library will give you many more options for your fly fishing reading. Fly fishing magazines are not a rarity.

Fly Fishing Lessons Tip #1

The main difference between fly fishing and other types of fishing is that instead of using a lure, fly fishing casts a line. Fly fishing line is typically heavier which makes it easier to cast than other fishing line.

Fly Fishing Lessons Tip #2

The flies used in fly fishing are typically thought of as either attractive or imitative. The attractive flies are used to prompt instinctive strikes by not looking like natural prey and instead environmental intruders. Flies that are imitative are flies that are made to look like the fish's natural food.

Fly Fishing Lessons Tip #3

Fly fishing is one of the most popular methods used by fishermen (and fisherwomen) to catch salmon and trout. Fly fishing can also be used to catch bass, pike, carp, panfish, snook, bonefish, redfish, the striped bass and tarpon.
